This extension will encrypt and decrypt your messages locally in the browser so that Facebook’s servers never see the plain text content of your messages. Ultimately, it serves as a proof of concept, and as an inspiration.
Background
When we use Facebook products, the company surveils us to collect information about what we say and what we do. It analyzes this information and capitalizes on what it learns about us, at our expense. Our messages to our friends reveal the most intimate details of our lives and personalities, and as it stands Facebook can read every word of every message sent through Messenger. This browser extension allows one to still use Messenger (and benefit from its pre-existing infrastructure) while maintaining some level of privacy.
