This extension will encrypt and decrypt your messages locally in the browser so that Facebook’s servers never see the plain text content of your messages. Ultimately, it serves as a proof of concept, and as an inspiration.

Background
When we use Facebook products, the company surveils us to collect information about what we say and what we do. It analyzes this information and capitalizes on what it learns about us, at our expense. Our messages to our friends reveal the most intimate details of our lives and personalities, and as it stands Facebook can read every word of every message sent through Messenger. This browser extension allows one to still use Messenger (and benefit from its pre-existing infrastructure) while maintaining some level of privacy.

︎ project report
Loomi is an exploration into how the feeling of “just hang out in the same space” can be manifested at distance. We set out to create a minimally viable intimate interaction, one that is even less effort than a FaceTime call, and, crucially, allows you to stay present in your immediate physical surroundings by not requiring you to direct your attention at a screen.

Description
24 fluorescent light tubes, each 2 feet long, arranged in a grid

Selected Group Exhbition
6th Annual Undergraduate Juried Exhibition, Stanford Art Gallery, Stanford, CA

“24 segments” is a dynamic light installation, inspired inspired by the fluorescent aesthetic of Dan Flavin and Bruce Nauman, and the conceptual exploration of form in Sol LeWitt’s Incomplete Open Cubes (1974/1982). At any given time, a tube is either on or off, hence there are 224 = 16,777,216 different possible patterns. The installation constantly changes patterns, never displaying the same pattern twice. Why are some patterns more meaningful to us than others? What exactly makes a pattern meaningful? What meanings lie in the millions of "meaningless" patterns?

In this work, I set out to meditate on the infinite possibilities of the subjective perspective and how we as humans navigate the paper-thin slice in which we find ourselves.

ceiling-mounted chaos.
6 solenoid actuators, 6 hanging speakers, 6 buckets, hundreds of falling metal balls.

Surrounded is an interactive sound art piece. The listener is at the center and conducts the piece with 6 buttons that control the dropping of individual balls into 6 buckets, the sound of which is then amplified and played back to the listener in real time.
Initially confronted by a chaotic cacophony of freefalling balls, over time the listener becomes more of a creator as they learn to harness the machine. The piece confronts the parts of life that seem unnerving or beyond our control.
